Captains Log

June 2009

Hard work is fun times when it comes to making planks, and lumber for carpentry use.The hot dry weather in June is the perfect time to do it, and that's what this boy is at, in this short story about sawmilling raw logs into usable materials, here at domecountry.

The sawmill is a modern miracle, I arranged for a small portable sawmill to do the deed, cutting logs into planks or lumber for use later. Getting the logs to the sawmill was quite an effort but in the end well worth it...You can see in the photo the custom sizes , mostly though we cut one inch, or two inch thicknesses.
The logs were gatherred up over the past few years in the winter months. Its good times when we get together to harvest a tree from the forest here. Most of the trees had been victims in local storms and hit by lightning. The beautiful ash tree was attacked by tent catepillars who stripped the tree of it's leaves leaving it to die! We like to make use of these majestic trees if we can but sometimes we simply just use them for fuel in our stoves.
Each piece carefullly placed with wooden stickers in between as they were stacked to dry in the hot sun. I placed a large tarp over the ground where the stacks of wood were placed to prevent moisture from coming up from the earth and facilate a better environment to complete the drying process. We cut several kinds of wood, ash, poplar, cedar hemlock, but mostly we cut white pine.
80 year old maple also hit by lightning,is laid to rest by CaptainThe task took two days and went with little or no problems. The hardest part was to get the logs positioned and ready for loading onto the saw. This is made easier with the use of a cant bar, which is designed to roll the logs using leverage. Once the logs are ready to be loaded, the sawmills hydraulics took over and we simply had to remove the slab-boards, and the cut planks from the mill. Download saw-mill Video

In this photo you can see how convenient the portable sawmill is. The logs once on the saw-mill table were quickly turned into lumber
