Captains Log

The forest is a resource, with trees for us to use. They grow bigger, and bigger, each year increasing their odds of being hit by lightning as they reach for the sun .Thats the case here as we account the harvest of two such trees ,one white pine and one sugar maple, documenting the journey of these former giants as they "get domed " at the hands of captain!
80 year old maple also hit by lightning,is laid to rest by CaptainStepping up to a 100 year old white pine tree is no task for the weak of heart .Even just to stand below it and look up at its majesty is awe inspring...they are immense!
Since lightning hit the mighty giant I had to either let it die before me, with it casting down the renmnants of its former self in useless bits and pieces ,or as I decided to do, stand up to it with a chainsaw, bringing it down swiftly, and off to the boardmaker, to be rememberred, by making it into usefull objects here at Domecountry.
I recorded the event with my VHS video camera and edited it into a wmv file for downloading so you can witness the last standing moments of this majestic piece of nature !

The Wood from the tree was made into boards and then planed so we could use it for building things like this beauty desk/bar seen in the small picture here.

..of course that was after it had been allowed to dry ..
From the time I felled this tree, to the time I starting using it, was over two years..During that time it was all handled by hand religiously, which took may hours of devoted labour..turning the boards over and over in the hot sun so they would dry right, then carried into the main dome ,for further drying..Finally off to the planing mill to get them all exactly 3/4 of an inch thick and even on all sides..
The results are fantastic ,it was a lot of work though..

The Two trees Im writing about here were used for so many things ,I was especially happy to have the wood available to build the lighthouse project..We mostly used the white pine for the framing and the maple for the trim work inside. The building is a landmark already so I wanted to use as much material for it as possible from trees that once stood here proudly .
I got this aerial shot of the tree showing it sawed into pieces ready for the sawmill The stump reveals the tree was already damaged, and if not hit by lightning would be needing removal soon I sit atop the hard maple log in Victory!

white pine made great material for this ceiling design in the main dome The white pine was used exculsively in framing up the lighthouse structure Inside the support column we can see again how useful the wood was in building this interesting structure the pine framing froma different angle
